Medical Marker Band Insert Molding
Aberdeen Technologies recently completed a successful mold tooling project which involved insert molding Medical Marker Bands onto a polyethylene extrusion which had been placed in the mold.
The evenly spaced bands, a total of 5 in all, are used as reference points to precisely locate the medical device in the body during a critical surgical procedure. As per the photo, a core pin is placed into the ID of the extrusion and serves to locate and stabilize it in the mold during injection. A Dow LDPE medical grade molding resin is used to mold the Markers along a runner, which is then detached after molding, leaving no gate vestige on the Marker itself. The tooling design utilizes the book mold concept with top and bottom halves connected via a hardened hinge, allowing the insert to be placed into the bottom half of the mold easily without obstruction.
Once located, the top half of the mold is closed, insuring no misplacement or accidental smashing of inserts during press clamping. All mold components are made from high grade stainless steel so that the medical device can be molded in a stringent cleanroom environment.
